THE TRIBE

Surprise

It had only been a week since I had returned from Honduras. I wasn't in the right state of mind with Uncle Seymour's passing and all. It didn't help that I had to leave Nadia behind with our new friend Miguel. What else could go wrong? The sounds of Lucky Daye's song 'roll some mo' began to play lowly and increased as my phone rang. I answered it reluctantly.

"Hello," I didn't pay attention to the number displayed; I just answered, and when I heard his voice, I wish I hadn't. It was my ex, Daniel. What could he possibly want from me at a time like this?

"Miko, hey bae. I heard you were back in town. Sorry to hear about your Uncle Seymour. I was in the neighborhood and wondered if I could drop by. It's been a long time since we've seen each other, and I figured you could use a friend."

What the hell was he on? "Uh, actually Daniel, I'm not in the mood for you nor your shenanigans. I have a lot to deal with now, and I would appreciate it if you wouldn't call me again." Before he could reply, I hung up the phone. The nerve of him, after all, he put me through; our relationship lasted all too long. Three whole years and I learned a lot throughout, but I regret being with him now and wish he would die. I know I got a lot more healing to do in that area, but when it comes to Daniel, you can call me Petty Betty.

You would probably feel the same way too if you finally agreed to a threesome with your man, and he left you for the side chick. I was disgusted and outraged. I only did it because he couldn't and wouldn't stay to himself within our agreed monogamous relationship. I thought that would make it better, really I did! Ironically it only showed his true colors about polyamorous living and me.

I deserved better than him. Although he was the first man, I loved unconditionally. He didn't deserve me. I was too good for him. I tried to be monogamous for him because he said he only wanted me. Fast forward; that was the reason I decided to go on my venture. I realized Daniel and I weren't ready to be monogamous to one another, although we tried. I mean, how could we? It's not in our nature to do so. Anyways after Daniel and I broke up, I started dating Jackson.

Jackson's everything I ever dreamed of, which is pretty scary, so I keep my distance from him. I know that sounds crazy, but I know myself, though. I don't want to get caught up in monogamy again, and Jackson is ok with the polyamorous lifestyle, but he often mentions just us being together and marriage, etc. I keep telling him I'm not going that route at all!! Jackson's in the military, so he travels most often, but I heard he's in town for his parents' anniversary celebration. My phone started ringing again. I just knew Daniel was calling back. This time I looked at the phone, it was Jackson calling.

"Hello!" "Hey, baby, I'm outside. I wanted to surprise you. I know you got a lot going on, but I got something for you." "Ok, Jackson, I'm on my way." I held the phone as I walked to the door and opened it. There he stood before me with a bouquet of roses and a dozen macadamia nut cookies, my favorite.

"Aww, babe, thanks so much." I grabbed his neck and held him tight. He hugged me back, and I got lost in the embrace. This guy, I swear, he does it to me every time. I'm keeping him around for the tribe. Definitely! As Jackson was closing the door, there was a knock. I wanted to tell him not to answer, but it was too late. He had already opened the door, and there stood Daniel.

"Oh, so this what we doing now?" Daniel asked his rhetorical question while Jackson looked confused.

"Excuse me brother, do I know you?" Jackson replied, sarcastically. "Baby, don't mind him; that's Daniel, my ex. I'll handle this." Jackson was furious. "Like hell, you will." He blocked me from going to the door. "Oh, so you the nigga that broke my girl's heart and left her for a piece of ass? Thanks, I picked up the pieces, and she is well taken care of now; she doesn't need you dropping by."

As Jackson went to close the door, Daniel forced his way into the house. All I could do was scream. "Daniel, leave I don't want you here. Get Out!!" Jackson was glad he had forced his way in..

"No, he wants to be a man and force his way in, so let me show him what that gets him." Jackson pulled out his gun!

"No man pulls out a gun and don't use it fool. I ain't scared of no gun! I want all the smoke!" Daniel replied, belligerently. I couldn't believe this fool. Did he want to die? Jackson held his position, pointing the gun at Daniel's head.

"Jackson, come on, baby, think about what you're doing!" Jackson looked at me in disbelief then looked back at Daniel. "No, this fool disrespected you, and you know I hate disrespect. Plus, he said he wants all the smoke too!"

I couldn't argue with Jackson, and I wanted Daniel to die. He deserved whatever was coming his way as far as I was concerned. Daniel lunged forward toward Jackson, and Jackson shot him, one to the chest. Daniel fell to the floor, and Jackson kicked him and turned him over; he was still breathing but couldn't move, then Jackson shot him in the head. There was no question about it. He was DEAD.

"Come here, baby!" Jackson beckoned for me. I walked towards him as he held his arms out to embrace me. He held me in his arms, and I felt safe and secure once again. The world around us no longer existed; it was just him and me.

"Ok baby I gotta call this in, give me a second." Jackson released me and called the police. He explained to the police officers that an intruder had come into my home, and he subdued him after an altercation. When the police arrived, Jackson showed his Military ID. I swear it was like magic. They cleaned up the mess and left no trace of Daniel. It was as if he never existed.

I came home to gather myself and finish business regarding my inheritance. Little did I know there would be a killing in my house. Surprise!!! I'm grateful that Jackson decided to come when he did. Now I never have to worry about Daniel ever again. Good-bye and good riddance.

The officers finished up their questions with Jackson, and then there was only us. Jackson just stood there, staring at me. "What! Baby, are you ok?" "Miko, you know I would do anything for you. You know that, right? I'm loyal to you and only you."

"I know Jackson, I know, and I appreciate you for it all." What the hell had I gotten myself into? I mean, I love Jackson and all, but there was a reason I wanted to stay away from him in the first place. Oh yeah, he's too thirsty! Uncontrollably crazy about me. I want him to be in the tribe, and then again, I don't, but I don't believe he's going to be easy to get rid of at this point.

Boy, oh boy, the Journey continues...
