THE TRIBE

Rasta Experience

As I walked down the trail to the waters, I could see the bright blue stream. The trees were like none I had ever encountered, so green and filled with fruit. There's nothing like entering a state of euphoria and realizing you're there. These Rastas have a way of welcoming you in spirit and the natural. I found myself utterly flabbergasted as I sat before a free spirit named Issachar. He explained to me that he was a non-traditional Rasta who believed in the foundation and premises of the culture and faith but was not bound by it. Since he and his tribe practice a lifestyle that embraces poly living many frowns are upon them. So, they live high up in the mountains away from the city in the countryside. They allow Haile Selassie to lead them, and the ancestors guide them daily. Their principles of life are One Love, non-attachments to material items, having the knowledge and knowing that eating meat is eating flesh, and believing babies and children are divine beings.

"One Love queen, have a seat. My empress Jewel is preparing a special meal for us. Until she's ready, we'll sit by the water and soak in the sun." He smiled at me, and his pearly whites gleamed. Issachar's free-formed locks were thick but naturally groomed to fit his crown. While we sat his other empress, Ruby sat at my feet, washing them in a basin. She was so humble and meek dressed in all white with her head wrapped and her copper bangles dangling. Her fragrance frankincense and myrrh allured me. Although I did not mind the smell, the mixture of that and her husband's patchouli was sending me into nostalgia. I relaxed and followed Issachar's instructions. I leaned back in a wicker lounger, and Ruby massaged my temples. As she did her thing, Issachar lit a spliff. The aroma blazed in the wind allowing the sweet essence of purity to find us. There was a clearing of negative energy I felt it.

As soon as I did, another smell entered my nostrils, sage. Issachar was burning the sage simultaneously. Issachar handed me the spliff, and I took a small pull. Inhaling and exhaling slowly, it went straight to my head. Instantly everything was more vibrant than before. The sun beamed brightly, and the warmth of it soothed my soul. Ruby finished her part and slowly walked away to a nearby cauldron. They were brewing something up a special potion for me. I was already excited. Issachar began to speak. "Miko, you did not come to Jamaica in vain. Me glad you made it thus far. You've already encountered beings that will forever change ya course and way of thinking. Da best of that is yet to come." Although Issachar had a thick accent, I could understand every word he spoke. Now and again some patois was thrown in there.

"I'm so blessed. I am thankful for this journey and the gift of you and your wives." When  I said that Jewel appeared from nowhere standing beside Ruby with a wooden bowl, she handed it to Issachar as she greeted me. Like Ruby, Jewel dressed in all white with a flowing skirt and her head wrapped. The women sat before me as Issachar sat beside me. "Irie, tis the time for you to ascend higher queen. You will go higher." Issachar passed the spliff to Ruby and Jewel. It got back to me once more then he handed me the bowl, but first, he gave me the first bite. It was a stew with all kinds of seasonings, veggies and a fresh rue. I finished the meal while we talked and shared stories. I was so happy by the LOVE that this man and his wives displayed. Authentic tribal living with a sense of freedom that goes beyond the borders of their heritage and culture. We sat by the waters till the sunset, and then the fire blazed lights aglow. The cauldron filled with herbs and spices finished. They created a potion I was able to consume and put on my heart. After my sacred ceremony concluded; at least that 's what I felt it was, we walked back to the village, and I rested well. Lucid sleep state on ten!

Another great journey. I cannot thank the universe enough for the opportunities afforded to me. However, I have to thank ME first, because if it were not for my dedication and commitment to follow through with my desire, I would've never made it his far. I look forward to my last two weeks of this journey in Honduras with my best friend. I've gained a lot of personal and spiritual insight. The journey continues.
