The cool midst of the torrential rains was still settling when
Hector decided to go for an evening stroll. Finally the rain had stopped, but the
water it left behind was far from receding. Hector could no longer watch the
mudslides continue to flow through his village. Brown, gooey sludge was not as
becoming as the green hillside he had grown accustomed to seeing. He wondered
if there was a way to escape this dreariness. Finally he made it to a path that
was frequently traveled. Each step he took, his feet gained weight from the
thickened mud in the valley. "Hector!" He heard a faint voice call his
name. He turned and looked up the hill and there she stood the village mystic.
She beckoned for Hector to come near. Hector acknowledged her then began to make
his way toward her. His heart pounded swiftly and he started perspiring
profusely as his stomach started to turn in knots.
Alissa always made him nervous.
She was the most beautiful lady in the village, in his eyes. She was often
quiet and kept to herself, but when she needed to speak she did so boldly. Most
of the commoners did not like Alissa because she was daring and wild. She dressed
in fitted clothing and adorned herself with fine jewels and metals. Her hair
was often braided and styled according to her mood it seemed. Alissa had come to
Peru as a teenager and immediately became an outcast. She was known as the uno
salvaje (wild one). Hector had grown fond of her but never told her. He wanted to
be her man, but his confidence hadn’t allowed him. Soon he would brave the
quest and show forth his love.
"Alissa Hi, what are you
doing here? I thought you left a long time ago." Hector spoke with concern and confusion. Alissa replied, "Yes, Hector I did leave and then I realized I left something
behind. My mother gave me this box that I swore to always keep up with and well
now it seems to be lost," 'Lost?" Hector asked with a puzzled look.
"Yes, will you help me find it?" Hector shook his head in dismay as he
slowly responded. "I don't know Alissa I was just trying to leave. I can't
bear to see the village like this it's so depressing." Hector knew Alissa wouldn’t take no for an answer but he figured he would try. Alissa looked him
dead in his eyes as she replied, “Hector, I have to get that box! I know a path
we can take that’s a roundabout way. We can miss all the sludge, ok?”
Hector seemed satisfied with her answer so he nodded yes and
followed Alissa as she led the way. When they reached Alissa’s hut it was ablaze. Hector ran towards the flames, but Alissa stopped him! She yelled, “Hector no, its ok! We’ll
get it after the fire. No worries.” Hector smiled then grabbed her hand and
kissed it. Alissa Blushed.
