Ocean Surprise

Mermaids

The sea roared, and the waves rolled. Penelope bobbed and weaved with the currents as she made her way to a nearby Fisherman’s boat. Finally! She was tired and just wanted to rest. The horn blew, and the ship would be sailing shortly. The sun was setting, and yet she was hopeful that she would be back home soon. She laid down and began to reflect on how she had gotten to this point.

Penelope always wanted to sail the ocean but settled for a 5-day cruise instead. None of her friends were able to take this trip with her due to their schedules, but this would never stop Penelope.  She didn’t mind having fun alone, besides she was often a loner. Late one night, after a pitstop, Penelope decided to get a view of the ocean from the 2nd floor. As she leaned forward on the rail, the boat jolted suddenly. She lost her balance and fell overboard. As soon as she hit the water her body began to convulse ferociously. She wanted to panic, but her soul would not allow it. So, she just breathed deeply, inhaling and exhaling. As she settled into the water thrusting herself upward she felt the tightness in her legs. They wedged together forming a large tail fin.

How could this be? Instantly Penelope gained a second wind and she shifted gears lunging herself deep into the waters. Her sight increased, and a vibrational pull from within instantly guided her. Before she knew it, Penelope was at the seashore.  As she glided further inland her body began to convulse once more. This time as her skin dried she could feel her legs separating. She was terrified and confused. What was she going to do? First, she had to get back home. What if the universe was trying to show her this is where she belonged? The night air was humid and calm. The moon and the stars lit the sky. Penelope appreciated the scenery but still longed for home. As she drifted deeper into the sea and could no longer keep her thoughts silent. “What the hell? Oh my god, what’s happening to me?”

A whirlwind began to form around her. Before she knew it, two mermaids had surrounded her. They seemed happy as they moved in close to her. One of them spoke, “Don’t be afraid. I’m Lalani, and this is Tressa, come with us we can help you?” Penelope immediately asked, “Why should I trust you?” Lalani flipped up her tail fin and replied, “Because we’re just like you, and it seems your boat has left!” With nothing to lose, Penelope took a chance grabbing Lalani’s hand, and they dove into the deep sea. Penelope was amazed that all of her senses had heightened. She could feel the vibrations of the underwater world. She felt at home as if she always belonged, but how? Everything was happening so quickly. Lalani began to slow down; she tugged Penelope a bit to shift her into the direction of her cove. Raging rainbow colors of coral reefs adorned the entry. Lalani began to speak, “This is your home now. You never have to go back if you don't want to. Life is good here. We have everything we need. The universe has chosen you, and we are honored to have you.” She smiled and offered Penelope a tray of delicacies.

It was all too much for Penelope to comprehend. All she could think about was how she was now a mermaid! “I can’t stay here! What will become of my life? I don’t know anything about being a mermaid. I have to go home. I have to!!!” She took one last look at the mermaids as she swam away allowing her instincts to guide her. Finally, she made it to shore. Off in the distance, she could see a fisherman’s boat. She knew that was her only chance to get back home. She was leery about getting back in the water. Would her body know what to do again? It had never done this in all her 30 years of living. As she thought about what might happen she realized she was walking towards the ocean.

She swam ferociously until she got close enough to board the boat. She climbed aboard silently. She had to find a place to dry quickly. There seemed to be only two men who were at the front of the boat. She cleared her throat as she felt herself about to choke and then she spoke. “Hello! Can you help me get home?” The men were stunned by her presence and nakedness. They almost did not believe she was alive. They thought she was a ghost, a figment of their imagination. As she spoke again they both realized she was actually there in their presence. Penelope introduced herself and explained her dilemma. The two men were happy to escort Penelope home.
